To start with, I liked the YouTube video. English 1200 was quite the experience for me. It basically rocked my English world. Before this class, I had never gotten below a C+ on any English paper I had ever written so going into 1200 I figured I would breeze by and do well off of just that. I was very wrong. This class shitted on me when it came to the papers. I learned that small things missing in a paper can have a significant effect on my grade.
The most beneficial thing from this semester was the notes that you added when grading my papers. Normally a teacher will simply just tell me what I did wrong, but you went the extra mile in telling me what I needed to do to make it work. I've never been good at correcting or editing papers but your notes throughout and at the end made it much easier for me to understand. The least beneficial thing from this class was definitely the reading essays. I am not a good English interpreter so pulling the meanings from these stories was difficult for me. I can read the stories and know the series of events, characters, symbols, all that fun shit but I've never been a guy who can pick out themes and messages the author has for his audience.
What mainly varied from my other English classes was the way the teaching was done. Most other teachers just say what needs to be said and that's it. The extra mile was gone by you in explaining and making the class understand by getting on our level and drilling it into our heads. What also varied was the fact that I can talk how I want in your class and it not be deemed disrespectful. I don't have the most G rated language and that fact that I did't have to completely filter myself was ...ing awesome.
Your class, though difficult, was definite one of my favorite classes ever. I know you said no brown-nosing but that's my honesty. I appreciate the way you teacher and your methods of doing so. It gave me a better perspective on English.
