I have had both good and bad English experiences, some of which taught me things where others did not. One thing that I did not benefit from in a few of my previous English classes was the fact that the teachers taught nothing but strict writing rules. These rules worried me, confused me, and ultimately ruined my writing because I could not ponder the topic due to all of the various formats running through my head. Another item that I did not find beneficial was reading stories together as a class. When different students raised their hands to read, I got distracted and often forgot what had just been read. Also, asking students to take turns reading slowed the reading process because each student reads at a different pace and others donít pay attention so they have to ask where to begin reading at. Additionally, I find it very difficult to understand the text and concepts when I am personally reading out load.

All the negative things set aside; I did benefit quite a lot from some of my English teachers. My personal favorite thing to do is have a teacher read my paper and then get it back with lots of red marks and side comments. I find this beneficial because the teacher explains what is incorrect in my writing and describes how to fix it. I enjoyed how a few of my high school English teachers held my writing to extremely high standards. They knew that I had the potential to write well and they were not afraid to critic my writing so I could do better. I also benefited from reading passages and annotating them, class discussions, and spelling or vocabulary review.

Like my previous English teachers, I think I would benefit most if you critic my writing and most importantly if you explain how to fix what is incorrect. I think everyone has different ďvoicesĒ while writing and if you understand those voices, you can better understand how to help. I appreciate how you make a point to understand each individual student. I think that is the first step to being able to assist students in their writing. I also think that if you continue to encourage your students to become better writers, they will. You have provided the tools and all we have to do is apply them.
