T.C Boyle does an excellent job of portraying his views in his stories and he has some of the same views as I do. Like Boyle, I dislike arrogance and greed, I believe that obsessions are harmful, fame is overrated, and animals should have rights. I like how Boyle supports his views through a variety of stories instead of just one. This tactic helps Boyle prove and reinforce his ideas.

Of the stories we read in class, I think that “Big Game” is my favorite. This story was intriguing because the Game Ranch, characters, and animals were all described in great detail. I enjoyed how Boyle gave a background story about the animals. I had so many mixed emotions when the terrible past of the animals were revealed. I was sad, disappointed, and downright pissed at times. These emotions, created by Boyle, made me extremely happy when Puff and the Benders die at the end of the story. I also enjoyed this story because the scenes occurred outdoors and I was amused at the idea of an idiotic and phony British man trying to create Africa in California.

My least favorite story thus far is “Heart of a Champion.” Some of the All-American aspects of this story were ok such as the vivid descriptions of the barn redder than red and the sky bluer than blue. The homeland feel of the story’s setting was also nice but the drastic shift of events was annoying. Lassie did more heroic things in one afternoon than most people do in a lifetime. The fact that Boyle portrays Lassie as prissy and human-like is not very appealing to me either because I imagine Lassie as a rustic and beautiful dog. The main reason I dislike this story is because Lassie is “fast” and abandons Timmy while choosing the coyote over him. Lassie was so “fake” at times that it was rather sickening.

I haven’t read any of the other stories in the Boyle book besides stories we read in ENGL 1100 but I think our class would enjoy reading “The Human Fly.” Besides that, I wouldn’t mind reading another story about animals such as “Whales Weep.”
