The TC Boyle stories have been unusual to say the least. They are very humorous and unpredictable, and sometimes disgusting. I do not particularly like them but most of the time they keep me guessing about what will happen next. I never read these types of stories in high school, mostly because the ones we read in this class are pretty “x rated”. Mostly I read books about Greek Gods or something boring, so I guess this is better than that. My favorite story so far is “Modern Love” because I enjoy reading about love. This story definitely had an interesting twist unlike any Nickolas Sparks novel I have ever read, but it was still entertaining. I liked how Boyle made the woman sound super germaphobic and grossed out by any type of sickness. I thought the part about the human condom was a bit too much, but then again it did add the most humor to the story. The uniqueness of Boyle’s stories are well thought out and must take a lot of thought to be that crazy. My least favorite story was the story “Heart of a Champion”. I disliked this story because I honestly did not understand it. The dog talked through his barks, which was kind of odd. The little boy was not very bright to say the least, especially when he would say “Oh golly Lassie, I almost fell” or something like that. I also did not understand the part where the dog and the coyote were “getting it on”. I honestly thought they were fighting the whole time over Timmy but I guess not…why even add that to the story? And oh yea, Timmy’s parents were ridiculously stupid (I guess that is where Timmy got it from). This version of Lassie was for sure the complete opposite of the one I remember when I was little. Honestly, I do not mind reading these stories because they aren’t boring for sure. I have not read any of Boyle’s stories other than the ones we read in class, but I wouldn’t mind reading another just for fun.
