So far I have enjoyed TC Boyle’s stories. They have been satirical, sarcastic and plain honest. His writing style is very descriptive and to an extent reminds me of the descriptions in Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”. All the stories we have read so far hold truth in everyday life. Everyone can understand and relate to one part to every story.
I particularly enjoyed “Modern Love” because it holds truth in every way. Whenever you meet someone or begin dating, there’s a possibility that the person is bat-crap-crazy. I liked this story because it deals with a middle age guy who is trying to get with a girl, regardless of her random obsession with diseases, and falls short at the last second when the girl says that they were close, but not that close. This story shows that in relationships, you might have to put up wit quite a bit and it still may not work out; it holds a dangerous truth that people don’t want to accept. The story shows the dark side of relationships where things are not perfect and it’s a side people neglect/refuse to see.
My next favorite show has been “Big Game” because it holds true to all the guy friends I have made at ECU. “Big Game” shows a man’s desire to prove himself by killing a big animal, first a lion then an elephant. This is similar to the friends I have made here as they have ‘manly contests’ to determine who is the manliest, strongest, etc. The story goes on to describe Bender’s failure in proving his manliness while his trophy wife, perfectly shoots two zebras. Bender continuously tries to prove himself until he ends up dying at the hands, rather yet feet, of the elephant.
My least favorite has been “Heart of a Champion”. Although it is a good story, and amazingly satirical, I don’t like the whole Lassie concept. The old time Lassie show was one of the classic American shows that made no sense at times, which is what I didn’t like. I understand that Boyle was making fun of “Lassie” through the dog commutating with the parents, the sex, and even the boy’s mannerisms and I thoroughly enjoyed, but the story did nothing for me overall.
