My response to the TC Boyle stories we've read so far can be generally summed up with the words "pleasantly surprised." High school slightly poisoned me in the fact that I was forced to read so many horrendous short stories that now I just assume each teacher given reading assignment is destined to be cringe worthy. So when we got the first assignment, I was dreading it to say the least. However Boyle is a clever man and a gifted writer. His works are not only easy to read but also intellectually stimulating and often cause you to think about the story and the characters in a different light. I think that's really cool and creative of him as an author to be able in just the course of a few pages tell a story and make it captivating. For example in Big Game, my favorite of the stories, Bessie Bee is a minor character until the very end but you still find yourself routing for her and being completely taken with her character and the depth of it by the end. I thought that story was awesome. Everything from the cowardly husband to the sassy teenage daughter to the righteous wrath of Bessie Bee...it was extremely well crafted in my opinion. Although I may be slightly biased because elephants are my favorite animal of all time and seeing one completely kick ass was empowering. I also really enjoyed the sort of juxtaposing relationship between the married couple. He is weak but tries to live up to his title as a successful business man, and she is the "total package." Every mans dream. My least favorite story was modern love. Everything about it gave me the creeps and I absolutely hated it haha. The lassie story was a solid middle with no totally partial feelings towards loving it or hating it. I did find myself laughing out loud a few times though.
