T.C Boyle’s writing style has proved to be very unique and therefore often captures my attention. His stories often contain an interesting twist to throw an unexpected turn in the story that draw the reader in. I believe that his stories interest me because I also tend to use a high amount of sarcasm in my everyday life. Therefore, my favorite story that we have read so far has been Heart of a Champion. The story thrives in Boyle’s use of sarcasm, like what human can understand a dog by his bark?? The answer is NO ONE! The show Lassie was extremely unbelievable and Boyle mimics this show throughout his story. Through sarcasm and exaggeration Boyle makes it evident throughout his story that Timmy’s character in himself is unbelievable. No kid would after just being stuck in a well be allowed to leave the house to go on yet another adventure. I enjoyed reading this story because it was obvious that Boyle was imitating the show and proving that the show was preposterous, which is something I never noticed as a kid. Boyle begins the sarcastic story by letting Lassie play hero role and save Timmy from the well and all of his insane shenanigans. But, he throws in his specialty twist by ending the story with Lassie running away with a coyote that has just tried to eat the dying Timmy. Surprising the audience and making me laugh personally showing you that everything you see on TV is not true and that no dog is that perfect.
My least favorite story we have read so far would have to be Modern Love. Boyle leads the reader to believe that a boy will finally turn in to a man and have sex with a girl. After performing insane requests such as wearing a full body condom during sex the boy only wishes to nail the girl in a normal way, but the girl bails. This story did not interest me because I found the boy to be simply stupid for performing such actions in hope of nailing just one girl. Then, I found the girl to be a bitch for leading the poor boy on in such an intense way. Although the story did humor me it was not my favorite read.
As you mentioned, it was a long stretch and I do not know of any other stories that would be interesting to read. But, I am interested to see what story we read next and what other unexpected endings Boyle has thought of.
