The final topic I chose for the annotated bibliography assignment is the pros and cons of the legalization of marijuana. The main reason I had for choosing this subject was because it would put me a step ahead for the next assignment, the issue essay, since I will be able to use the same topic and sources for that one. However, I am also interested in learning more about both sides of the controversial debate over whether to legalize this drug. I would like to separate myth from fact when it comes to the positive uses of marijuana and learn about any long term negative effects that it has.
I have found a wide variety of sources on the legalization of marijuana and since this has been a fairly common topic of discussion for the past several years, it is not too difficult to find recent sources that meet the date range requirement. I have found everything from simple, official fact sheets about marijuana to websites and books based on people’s opinions on the matter to articles about studies that have been conducted to determine the effects of the drug. A lot of the sources I found were newspaper articles about legislative bills that have been proposed and rallies that have occurred concerning the matter. I can visualize using all of these types of sources in a paper because I think they are all relevant to my topic in some way.
I found most of my sources through the online Joyner Library database, which is where I pretty much always go to find reliable sources when I have to research something. Plus, the class session that was held in the library taught me how to navigate the site a little bit better and use it to help me cite my sources, although I know you have to double check the automatic citations. I do not have any major questions or concerns about the annotated bibliography assignment. Having looked at the example that is posted on the course website, I feel confident that I know what to do. The format looked a little different from the one I did for ENGL1100, but as long as I have that to guide me, I think I’ll be fine.
