For my issue paper I have decided to write about the DREAM Act. The DREAM Act is a law that will allow illegal immigrants who were brought into the United States as children to gain legal status if the enroll in the military or if they obtain at least an associate’s degree. The DREAM Act has supporters as well as critics. Those in favor of the DREAM Act think that children should not be blamed for their parent’s mistake. These people are already here and have obtained a high school diploma or a GED. If they are not allowed to work legally they will have to work illegally which creates even more problems for the US. If these illegal immigrants are allowed to work legally, which means more taxable income for the US economy. If illegal immigrants join the armed forces for a minimum of two years and put their lives on the line for a country that does not even conceder them as one of them, the least they can be rewarded will be legal status. Those against the DREAM Act say that legalizing those are entered the US illegally will increase illegal immigration. Another argument against the DREAM Act is that if illegal immigrants are allowed to go to school they will have to pay in state tuition and will lower the revenue that colleges receive. Another argument against the DREAM Act is that because illegal immigrants will be able to attend universities they will take spots they should have gone to citizens otherwise. The DREAM Act directly affects illegal immigrants who otherwise would not have a chance of obtaining legal status. This law will allow them to further their education and fulfill their dreams. It will indirectly affect all the other students that are applying for college because space is limited. If the DREAM Act gets approved ,nationwide, it will increase the competition of those who are applying for admission. Down the road it will also increase competition for positions in professional fields. There is still much debate on this legislature and although it has been approved in some states is has not been approved at a federal level.
