Issue paper

For my issue paper, I chose to do whether or not autistic children would benefit more or less from being in mainstream schools. I chose to do this because working with children with disabilities is something I'm considering. The two opposing sides are people who think they need special treatment and should be in schools made specifically for them and people who think that children would actually benefit from being enrolled in a mainstream school. There are a lot of studies done that I read about for my annotated bibliography proving children have benefited from entering a mainstream school, mainly social wise. There were a lot of articles about how much more helpful mainstream schools have been as people get more educated on the topic, but I didn't read a lot about the negative aspects of it. There are a lot of good points for each side and from what I've read so far I think it just depends on the individual. On one hand, it won't be as easy for a child to get special treatment when needed at certain schools even if the school has special programs specifically for them. Even though the school may be supportive and helpful, some teachers may or may not be as cooperative and helpful as they should, so in some ways it is safe to enroll them in a non mainstream school. On the other hand, a lot of autistic children's main struggles deal with social skills. The have trouble forming relationships and communicating with others which is something they're going to have to do eventually. Some believe that if they are introduced to normal scenarios instead of being "sheltered" that will him them in the long run. There is the main concern of the child not fitting in and or getting bullied which has to be considered because that could damage the child for the rest of his or her life. It is important that they feel normal and have the same opportunities as children without autism, but at the same time that could potentially hurt a child more than help.
