My experiences in previous English classes have not been that great. In high school, I did not have the best teachers, especially my junior and senior year. My English teachers did not seem to care too much for the subject and I found that I did not learn anything from them. I remember I turned in this long research paper and I never received it back. They did not give much feedback in our papers so I was unsure of what I needed to improve on. Also, my teachers were unclear of exactly what they were expecting out of our papers. We did not read much literature, and when we did, it was not interesting. A lot of what we did was learn vocabulary words and their meaning. This was helpful to some extent when taking the SAT, but not enough. By not having the best English classes, I did not do too well on the writing and English part of the SAT. At the time I was ok with not doing too much English and grammar, but now I regret it taking college courses. I feel as though I was not prepared as I should have been. Ultimately, having these easy teachers, that taught not much of anything, hurt me in the long run. Iím hoping now that I have moved on to college and taking college courses, I will be working with teachers that know what they are doing and I can really learn something from them. I am not a very good writer and struggle with writing papers. I find myself always sitting there thinking of what to write and tend to not be the best with grammar. One of the most effective things you could do to help me improve my writing is providing a lot of feedback in my papers. Another effective way to help me with my writing would be to make it very clear of what exactly is wanted in the paper. I also like the group discussions about the readings we do, I get ideas and new understandings from seeing others viewpoints.
