In previous English classes throughout high school, I actually did really well. At that time English was easy to understand because when we wrote papers everything was a set formula. For example: Intro, thesis, three examples to support thesis, 3 body paragraphs and your closing statement that restates your thesis. Since we were taught to organize things that way it was so easy for me to write a great paper. We even did a lot of reading, usually 4 or 5 books a semester and usually just two really long books in AP English. What was beneficial about all of this is when it comes to reading books, I can do it quickly and also know how to break it down to understand what the author is thinking and what the story means/is talking about. I can use context clues to figure out things I donít understand in my reading. Although high school English classes did teach me a lot, when I came to college, all of that went out of the window. That whole ďformulaĒ was crap and didnít help me at all. I learned that there are other formats to write in besides the ďformulaĒ and that what professors really look for is your diction and the validity of your sources to back you up in research writing. Also, we werenít taught how to cite our sources in anything other than MLA format. I know now that some professors use different ones and I have a hard time trying to figure out how to cite my sources because of that. I think that for this semester, I need more help with my cohesion and how to cite my sources in my writing. When I write, itís all worked out I my head but on paper, not so much. I know what I want to say but I have a hard time saying it because Iím not sure how to phrase it and that might be one of my biggest weaknesses. When it comes to my in text citations, I donít know how to cite them without over citing in my paper. I feel it looks crowded so I try not to include al the facts at once and I need to know how to break up my writing so I can do that.
