My experience in English 1200 this semester has been very unique. The class was fun, and the fifty minutes of class time went by quickly. I have been in various discussion type classes throughout being at ECU, such as different music history classes, but none of them have been quite like this one. As a rule, I am not a quiet person when it comes to class discussion. However, I feel that the topics that the class talked about throughout the semester did not really lend themselves to someone with my personality. It seemed that in order to take part in the conversations, you needed to be an outspoken person. I am worried that my lack of talking in these discussions may hurt my “studentship” grade. If the nature of the discussions had been focused more on course topics, I probably would have felt more comfortable to take part in them. The most beneficial part of this course was the free-writes and in-class essays. I feel that they forced me to write and format things quickly. As much as I did not like most of the Boyle stories content wise, I think that they were also very beneficial to me. I found myself needing to read some of them twice in order to really understand the point that Boyle was trying to make. After reading the first few stories, I realized that I should be looking for much more in Boyle’s stories. The same details that the author included and intertwined throughout many of the stories was very interesting, as well as the way that Boyle cynically hid deeper meanings behind many of his points. As a result, I found reading these stories to be beneficial because it was not possible to “mindlessly” read, but instead I was forced to pay attention to every detail in order to understand the stories. The least beneficial part of this class was probably the beginning class discussions. It would have been nice to work in course related topics in this discussion, thus allowing me to feel more comfortable in talking. My experience in ENGL 1200 has differentiated from other English courses for several reasons. The biggest difference is the subjects and amount of class discussions. The other differences are that I have not been in classes where free-writes have been assigned, and I have never been in a class that has had online discussions. I feel that both of these assignments were a positive difference from other English classes.
