My final topic for the informative paper is the history and development of recreational therapy. The paper will cover three main stages starting with discovery, the development, and then how the profession is today. The discovery stage will include an idea from Plato who said that you can learn more about a man in an hour of play than a lifetime of conversation. This stage will also include key figures such as Florence Nightingale, Jane Adams, Neva Boyd, and Joseph Lee. These people thought of morally based recreation and they began to notice how recreation greatly improved the lives of others. The timeline for this stage will cover from the late 1800s till the mid-1900s. The second stage is development which will cover early organizations that formed to implement the idea of using recreation to assist all people including those with disabilities and illnesses. These organizations will include NART, ATRA, ARS, and NRPA. The final stage is recreational therapy today, a climb to mastery. This stage will be from the 1960s to present. I plan to discuss the career goals and priorities of recreational therapists and also what tools and processes they use to form treatment methods.

I will develop each main idea by providing detailed information about each significant individual, process, and technique used in recreational therapy. I want to focus on the goals and steps the profession took and also what obstacles the growing profession had to overcome. These obstacles will be about people’s different opinions and views of what recreation means to society. I plan to dig deeply into the history of recreational therapy through research, reading, and lots of note taking.

Some useful resources that I plan to use include the ECU Joyner Library website database and also notes and reading sections from my Foundations of Recreational Therapy class (RCTX 2230). The teacher from my RCTX 2230 class has recently covered information about the history and development of recreational therapy. I plan to use the information he provided as an outline to help me develop the ideas and history in my paper. Also, on the Joyner Library website, I will search various online books that cover the treatment processes used in recreational therapy.
