My school requires us to have a website but we use one provided to us through Catawba County schools. However, it is very hard to use and every year I feel like I have to re-learn how to work the site and post things on my page. For this reason, I chose to create a new site using Weebly. I was so amazed at how effortless it has been to create the webpage. Adding a new tab is as simple as clicking a button as opposed to the several step process involved with Sharepoint. I have always used my site to post links to things we do in the classroom (notes students might miss if absent, vocabulary, spelling words, general information, announcements, newsletters, etc.). Most everything on my site is also sent home or given to the students in some manner and I update a few times a week. It is a lot to keep up with but I find that the people who do use it, greatly appreciate it. I think this year I am going to either send my parents a link to my Weebly page or perhaps link it from my school page (if they'll let me do that). One thing I don't currently have on my school website (because I somehow accidentally deleted it) is a section for outside links. I really like the idea of creating links to online resources for students, parents, and then other teachers as well for my new website.

I have seen several of you mention sites like Discovery Ed which I use also and greatly. However, one site I absolutely love is Brain Pop ( It is a paid site but my school has a subscription to it and students can log in and access it until 6 pm on week days. I love it and so do the kids. It is short video clips on everything from science topics to language arts topics and there is a K-3 site called Brain Pop Jr. The clips are animated and talk about serious topics but there is always a twist of humor to keep the kids interested. There are some free videos you can check out but those are limited.

Another site I learned about was a very simple online book publishing site (free!!!!) called RealeWriter ( and then also Easy Student Publishing (which is free as long as you have a least ten kids participating). I have used Easy Student Publishing ( with my students and it is a really awesome program. You can do a class book or kids can do their own individual books. It is 100% on-line but kids can upload photos or create their own pictures using the "stickers" from the website or they can draw their pictures using the mouse. Then of course they type in the text. We did a genre study of the mystery genre and my students wrote their own mystery books. They had a blast and the best part was they each got their very own published book.

One site that I like that is free (but has the option to not be free) is We Give Books ( I like this site because it has books from a wide variety of levels (interest and readability). Some books are free but some books you have to buy. The site also has teacher resources as well.
