You will love kindergarten. If my students are not working on guided reading with me or word study with my assistant, they are in literacy centers. Each student has a literacy center partner. With their partner they visit centers. Each week I have a smartbaord center. At the smartboard center they may collaboratively complete activities (most of which I download from smartexchange). I also pull up the ASU Written Word Sorts on the smartboard (their partner is someone from their guided reading group) and they work on filling in the blanks together. I also have a word sorting center where they work on their word sorts from previous weeks with their partner as review. We have two desktop computers in my room so they visit those with their partners and use the links from my website to visit different sites. I also let them use Netbooks from our C.O.W. and complete AR Tests on books we have read in guided reading groups. Of course, letter naming puzzles and file folder games are great for centers at the beginning of the year. Sometimes I am brave and let them work with their partner on my iPad with apps I have downloaded. More than anything, I try to mix it up often so they don't get "bored" and become an issue for my assistant and me while we are working with our groups.

They stay busy, actually (especially when they get the hang of things). The best advice I can give you: Don't underestimate the kinders. They are capable of so much more than you'd think. I teach... more
