Letterland is great. I use it to motivate kiddos who aren't already familiar with the alphabet. For those who do already "know" the alphabet, it helps them feel more comfortable with the sounds. There are so many resources that accompany Letterland, which I like. I usually spend more time using Letterland (as the year progresses) with my struggling readers.
As far as their writing is concerned, the word sorts are responsible for their spelling. As soon as they move past the picture sorts and into the sorting patterns, their spelling improves (like clockwork).
I am very lucky to have such a wonderful assistant who I think of as a co-teacher...in fact, I never refer to her as my "assistant" -- she's much more than that.
