Yeah, I use picture books in my classroom but I have to be careful. My kids tune me out if I use Fancy Nancy or Llama Llama. However, just your regular run of the mill picture books like Cynthia Rylant or Patricia Polacco or Eve Bunting, they are fine. They love cartoons and movies but again I have to be careful as to what it is. We go to Raleigh every year and the bus ride is three hours so we'll play a movie. I always bring a selection and if given the choice between Tangled and The Lorax, they'll choose The Lorax. They are fine with Magic School Bus but groan over Sid the Science Kid. They will watch Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium over Babe. I just have to be careful that I find things that they don't perceive as being "too baby" for them. I remember when I was in high school, blues clues came out for the first time and I had a friend who bought blues clues pencils and note pads, etc. However, my fourth graders wouldn't be caught dead with one! I think it almost becomes cool again once they hit high school.
