Heather, I really enjoyed the vocabulary articles also. There were a TON of resources to use. I like the collaborating to find definitions. I like to have kids talk them out before they look up the definition.

I haven't had a vocabulary journal but I have had students do the graphic organizers where they write it in their own words and draw pictures. They really enjoy it and I think it helps because they get the repeated practice with the words. It's not just let me read a definition or talk about it and move on. When I do text complexity lessons we look at the Tier 2 and Tier 3 words and they discuss the words first, find clues in the text, then look them up. Then they create the graphic organizers with partners. I don't know that just drawing a picture and writing a definition in their own words helps but I think the repeated exposure and interaction with them does.

        Great idea to put all the character words together. Do they do anything else with the words or is it just a few students working on them and then put in the book after they are shared?

        I like the idea of putting all of the words together into a big book and then having a big project/dictionary at the end of the year to refer to. Great idea!

          Yes, that is true. Many tablets don't have the popups and tool bars like reading online. So therefore there is not as much distraction with those devices.

        I like the organizers, I will surely do this and maybe just have them have a binder to keep them in and that way they have their own dictionary.Great ideas!
