I do something similar to your vocabulary four square. I call it a word web (the original idea I got it from it looked like a web but it is easier and more roomie to split or fold the paper into fourths). I have the kids write the word in the center of the page and then they write a definition in their own words as they understand it, then they draw a picture in the next box, a third box is for synonyms/antonyms OR examples/non-examples, and then a sentence using the word in order to convey the meaning goes in the fourth box. It is a simple yet effective strategy and it gets kids really thinking about the word, especially when they are having to come up with a picture or synonyms or examples.

Those are good ideas. I have been looking for some good vocabulary activities to use with my 5th graders.
