Yes, we have to get kids to make connections to previous understandings and words that they already have. I know I have mentioned on here the book Bringing Words to Life but there were several similarities for me between the information in the vocabulary readings and that book. One of the things it talks about doing is giving kids the opportunity to think about the word and make connections to other things related to the word. I could see using blogging or padlet or something like that to get the kids into a virtual discussion. For instance if you might be working on getting kids to learn the word "exceed". You could post a question like "When might you exceed something and why?" (I'm sure if I thought about it more I could think of a better word/question - lol!). The kids could post their responses to you and comment on each others answers.
