My junior and senior year of high school I took AP English, I had to do a lot of rigorous work and writing long papers were definitely apart of it. I have written a literary analysis paper, a poem analysis, a synthesis paper, and a persuasion essay. We did a lot of those papers to prepare for our AP exam at the end of the year. My teachers wanted us to mainly explain the importance of novel we were reading at the time. In our literary analysis papers we had to read novels and then identify symbols or quotes used in those novels and explain why they were used/their purpose. The whole point of these papers was to go into depth about what’s hidden behind the novels story. It was so that we could understand the book a lot better. I did poem analysis papers a lot but they never seemed to get easier. I found those to be the most difficult for me merely because the poems we read were AP styled and were extremely difficult to understand. I usually thought one thing happened in the poem but it turned out to be something completely different. We had to identify the style of the poem, the meaning behind the title, and give specific examples of quotes and analyze them. It was just a lot harder to do these essays because there was just so much to find and identify. There were always so many uses of figurative language and then we had to go into depth as to why the author said those certain things. Even though these papers were challenging, they overall helped me a lot because I learned how to analyze novels and see the hidden messages in novels. For option 1 of the T.C. Boyle book paper, when it says “explains the importance of them” are you asking for us to explain their lessons? Did he write all these different stories to teach the reader life lessons? How will we summarize the stories without making it to lengthy? Is this paper going to be a lot more difficult then the first one we did?

What kinds of papers have you written before in terms of literature? Have you ever done a literary analysis? Poem analysis? What questions do you have going into this TC Boyle paper?
