For the T.C. Boyle paper I have decided to do a theme paper. I chose this option because I think for me it is harder to point out the similarities and differences in two stories to compare them than it is to relate a group of stories through a particular theme. The theme that I plan to focus on in this paper is obsession. I chose this theme because it is a recurring theme in almost all of the stories we have read. In some of the stories the obsession is unhealthy more than anything else but in some way there is always a character that has a fixation on something even though it may not be the main focus. For example, in modern love the character Breda had an obsession with cleanliness and exotic diseases. The stories I have decided to focus on are On for the Long Haul and Human Fly. In On For The Long Haul, the main character had an obsession with modern civilization being overthrown and he believes that the only way to protect his family is to move to Montana and live off the land, this plan backfires and he puts his family in more danger than he ever would have living in California. In Human Fly, Zoltan is a stunt man who has an obsession with being famous. He ends up pushing himself harder and harder in an effort to make himself famous that he kills himself. Another recurring theme in both of these stories is greed. In both stories there are agents that want to profit over their demise. In On for the long haul, Arkson tells Bayard that he is there to help his family and protect them, but months after moving to Montana Arkson doesnít recognize Bayard and moves a psychopath next door to Bayard. Bayard paid a half a million dollars to be ďsafeĒ but in reality Arkson would provide anything to anyone in order to get more money. In Human Fly, Zoltanís agent keeps pushing him even when he looks worn down and needs a break to make money off of his popularity. He took advantage of his obsession of being famous and used it to push him until he died.

Which option for the Boyle paper have you chosen (Theme or Compare/Contrast)? If theme, what theme have you chosen and why? What stories have you chosen for your paper and why?
