My thesis in the T.C. Boyle Stories paper is based around a theme in two of the stories we have read so far. The theme I introduced in my thesis I my paper was obsession. The stories that support this theme well are “The Human Fly” and “On for the Long Haul” because in both stories this theme is very similarly supported by Boyle. There are multiple parts in each story that support the theme in my thesis. In “The Human Fly” the main character Zoltan has a large obsession over becoming famous. This is very evident because multiple times in the story all he says is “I want to be famous”, or “I want to make my mark”. But after every stunt he performs he is in worse shape than he was before. We can make an impression in the story that Zoltan also just wanted to be dead. At the end of the story he does die from one of his stunts and this shows us that Boyle think obsession is unhealthy.
The role obsession plays in “On for the Long Haul” is very similar because it has a similar outcome and Boyle gives us the same feeling about obsession being unhealthy. The main character in this story, Bayard Wemp, is very adamant that his family needs to move to the middle of the desert and have a shelter in preparation for a bomb/apocalypse. He spends half a million dollars on this land that is worth nowhere near that. He spends all this money but he never learns how to shoot a gun, even when he is warned that he will never know when he needs it. Wemp’s agent moves a psychotic man next door to him after Bayard and the man had a conflict earlier in the story. They had a standoff and Bayard was killed because he did not know how to use his gun. We can tell again that Boyle thinks obsession is unhealthy because Wemp was so obsessed over preparing for nuclear war or the apocalypse that he didn’t bother to learn how to protect himself in the time of need. He had the money and not the brains, which in the end got him killed.
