I believe I have a strong thesis that really fits well with my theme paper. My thesis for the paper is the following: “The stories and the way the characters are tell me that the author thinks that obsession is something unhealthy and extreme. Boyle creates the main characters in such a way, that when we read the stories, we feel how he does feels towards the characters.” I think the two T.C. Boyle stories that best prove my thesis are, “Little Fur People” and “On For the Long Haul”. They both fit the thesis perfectly because they are both about a main character with some sort of unhealthy obsession. Boyle clearly shows that these obsessions are extreme in many ways throughout both stories. In “Little Fur People”, Boyle has many points that prove my thesis and theme right. First, he has Grace, the main character favoring the squirrels over her own daughter. She forgets her daughter’s birthday, but can remember everything little detail about every little squirrel that makes each unique. To make it all worse, she provides a home to 32 squirrels. The squirrels act as her pacemaker and are the only things that keep Grace sane. She tries to save her squirrels from being revoked, but in the end, loses them all. In “On For the Long Haul”, Boyle has our main character Bayard obsessed with safety. He goes to the extreme with trying to keep his family and himself safe. The story starts off with Bayard wanting to get his appendix removed, when in reality, he did not need to get it removed. He starts to freak out more, and he ends up getting lured into buying a $500,000 log cabin in Montana. The house supposedly includes many weapons and protection that will keep their family safe. They move and Bayard soon comes to realize that Montana isn’t any safer than where he was recently living. He also bought all these guns for protection, when he knows that he will never have the courage or ability to be able to shoot any of those guns. Both stories fit the theme and provide immense support for my thesis.
