For the Boyle paper, I did the theme paper in which my thesis states - Boyle shows his disgust towards these characteristics by showing how obsession can cause one to do wild things and how it can even become unhealthy, as well as how he feels that greed overpowers any morals one may have. The two stories that I chose that I feel best explain and prove this thesis through textual support are “On For The Long Haul” and “Human Fly”.
Some parts of the story that help prove obsession are when Zoltan continues to do more outrageous stunts, one after the other despite his unhealthy state, physically and mentally. No amount of fame is enough for him, no stunt is crazy enough, and no amount of news crews or bystanders watching would be enough for him either. IN regards to that, Sol and the agent continue to make sure he follows through with the dangerous stunts, again despite how unhealthy he truly was, but they front Zoltan the money and make sure he goes through with the stunt because for them that is more money in the bank. The agent never truly cared about Zoltan, and even when he claimed to and knew that certain things were dangerous, he allowed Zoltan to perform them anyways. He also states how at Zoltan’s funeral, an uncle is the only mourner.
Like Sol and the agent, Sam Arkson also had greed consume him. He sold a costly cabin to the Wemp family, sold items he viewed as necessary, and then proceeded to sell a house to a psycho next to the Wemp family, who moved to a secluded home for safety from others. Arkson knew Cullum threatened to kill Wemp, but that did not matter to him because selling property meant more profit coming in. Wemp himself also had a certain characteristic that Boyle did not particularly like, which is obsession. He was obsessed with safety for himself and his family. He even went as far as to remove his appendix, his very healthy appendix, and then proceeded to move to Montana in the middle of nowhere to protect his family from the surrounding doomed world.
