My thesis in the Boyle paper was a pretty easy one to decide on. The themes that I decided on were obsession and greed. Boyle talks about how Zoltan is obsessed in “The Human Fly” with being famous. Even after doing a daredevil stunt, he would want to continue to raise the bar even higher. The agent and his partner were extremely greedy in letting Zoltan continue doing these crazy stunts just so they could keep on making money. They didn’t care the Zoltan was risking his life with each and every one of these stunts, all they cared about at the end of the day was the $$$ they were brining in. Near the end of Zoltan’s run, they continued setting him up with crazy stunts and it turned out that Zoltan would die due to one of his crazy stunts. They were willing to put up Zoltan’s life in order to make some money, which is extremely greedy.

The next story that shows obsession and greed is “On for the long haul”. Bayard is obsessed with being safe, will take his family to great lengths to make sure of that. They moved into the middle of nowhere, where no bad people or killings normally happen. A man named Arkson sold Bayard the land; he shows examples of greed because all he really cares about is the money. Arkson sells the land next to Bayard to a man named Cullum. Cullum really doesn’t say much, but when he first confronts Bayard, they already don’t get along. Arkson didn’t ask Bayard about his opinion about someone moving into the lot next to him, he just made the decision so he could make some quick money. In the end of the story, Boyle writes that Cullum was “on for the long haul” and that he killed Bayard, a move that most readers, including myself, didn’t expect.

I picked these two themes because I felt like I could write a lot about them, and that it would be easier for me to write about them compared to the compare/contrast paper or any other themes.
