My thesis is held by two stories, ‘On for the long haul’ and ‘Peace of mind’. Two stories shared identical subject or theme, safety or peace of mind- they are interchangeable. Besides the similarity of characters. Through using actual phrase ‘peace of mind’ on ‘On for the long haul’, Author makes correlation of stories more solid and strengthen his theme.
My thesis is that author try to show that what’s not right way to pursuing peace of mind, and then make people think about it. He thinks people cannot insure their safety against dangerous world by buying survival items; such as guns, seeds, fertilizer, medical supplies, weaponry, munitions, land, cabin, four wheel drive vehicle and security alarm system. Thesis is supported by stories’ plot and strategy. Authors put Coles’ opinion in the story in the part he picked on Giselle with unreliable home security alarm system. Also He uses ironical development of story that Bayard’s efforts to be safe actually turned out putting him in direct crisis which eventually lead him to death. Ellis got attacked in spite of all those alarm system. In fact, author conveys lot of messages to reader. With Bayard’s unhealthy obsession and Sid’s statement on alarm system, He told us Obsessing is like trapped oneself into the cage which is rather limited, dangerous. Giving Giselle punishment, using people’s fear or obsession in order to make a profit in business is bad. Also Boyle introduce five different aspects of action against a bleak world. Coles, Cullum and Arkson, dedicated themselves into survival. Tina, ignoring the world, dangers. Sid having a trust on people. Giselle, moving forward. Bayard, Fran, Hillary and Ellis, buy the material things expecting those to insure their safety. He tells readers what not to do- Bayard, Fran, Hill and Ellis eventually got in danger. Coles, Cullum, Arkson, Tina and Sid are not that likable characters. However, Boyle didn't show any preference on certain character. So it could be said he did not give readers right way to pursuing safety. He let readers to make decision by themselves on way to get peace of mind.
