The thesis for my Boyle paper is the characters and events from T.C. Boyle’s book prove that Boyle thinks that greed and obsession are harmful. I believe that I can correctly link the two stories “On for the Long Haul” and “The Human Fly” to prove that Boyle thinks that greed and obsession are harmful by analyzing the main characters that portray these themes in a way that leads us to think and agree with what Boyle wants us to think. These characters do thinks and act in certain ways that makes us not agree and dislike them. For example Boyle describes the agent of the Human Fly to be someone who might care for Zoltan and want to make sure that he does not get injured, but at the end of the story we find out that he in fact only cares about the money that he can profit off of Zoltan. Another example that I will use in my paper is how the “real-estate” salesman uses Wemp’s obsession to his advantage which leads to Wemp agreeing that he might need protection from an apocalyptic event. Not only do these stories have a major theme of greed but also a very strong presence of obsession. In both of the stories the greedy characters take advantage of the characters who have a harmful obsession. In the Human Fly, we first meet Zoltan as the agent is working at his office and the first thing that he says is “I want to be famous” this was a clue that he might have an obsession to fame and to be remembered. Throughout the story we find out that Zoltan is so obsessed with fame that he does multiple stunts to get his name in the big lights. This works for a little while until he ends up dying from the multiple harmful stunts such as riding under a truck all the way across the country. In on for the long haul we notice that Wemp, a husband and father worried about his fate and taking up a salesman on a crappy deal that sets them up next to a neighbor that really is on for the long haul. 366
