For my argument paper, I plan to write on the controversial issue of stricter gun laws and the argument of why they should not be enforced. I looked through a number of other controversial issues and none really grabbed my attention like this one. As a firearm enthusiast, I advocate against having stricter gun laws due to the fact that it would hurt not only myself but also other gun enthusiasts in purchasing firearms. A counter argument for stricter gun control is that guns should be regulated more due to the number of gun related deaths in the United States. Take for example, the shootings at Columbine and Virginia Tech, gave the country a negative outlook on how guns were used. Not every gun owner in the United States is mentally insane and will kill innocent people. Due to passing of recent legislation, obtaining a firearm has become more extraneous to purchase as a law abiding citizen. In order to purchase a handgun in the United States, an individual must go through extensive background checks and apply for a handgun permit with the local sheriffsí department and wait for approval. Also, you must be 21 years of age to purchase a handgun in the United States, legally. The gun control issue interests me because I am, and have been, a gun enthusiast for the majority of my life. I was only recently able to purchase a gun for myself due to the fact that I turned 18 this past year. I have been around guns my whole life due to the fact that my father owns multiple rifles and handguns, as he is also a gun enthusiast. I explored writing about other topics but I was not as passionate about others as my stance on gun control. It will be interesting to see how this paper will turn out due to my firm stand against stricter gun control. All that aside, the evidence is ample on both sides of the argument for gun control and against gun control. As an American citizen, it is my given right to purchase and own a firearm, as stated in the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution. Unfortunately, stricter gun control laws are making it harder and harder to purchase firearms legally.
