My final topic for the argument paper is that single-sex schools are not beneficial to students and their education. I chose this topic for my paper because there are very strong arguments agreeing with the topic and good counter arguments as well. Some main points that support my argument are, as Kristin Stanberry states “Gender differences in learning aren't the same across the board” and “Students in single-sex classrooms will one day live and work side-by-side with members of the opposite sex.” Psychologist Gloria Meaux explains this idea: “The real world isn’t composed of all boys and all girls, and so you delay that process of socialization and working those communication skills out” (Seith, 2002, 8). “Deep friendships are formed between young men and women that exist beyond anything romantic or sexual. These relationships are formed easier when promoted by the coeducational setting” (Welch, 2002). These are some examples from my sources that I can use to support my argument. I think they make strong and logical points towards the topic. My sources so far are from newspapers, university studies, education research organizations, and studies by psychologists. These sources have really helped make my argument so far easier, stronger, and logical.
I think my biggest challenge with this paper is going to be trying to resist the urge to include my own opinion into the argument. I am very opinionated and considering the fact that I have had my own experiences in a single-gender school I have a very personal opinion on the topic. But I am going to keep in mind the fact that in my Boyle analysis paper I lost a lot of points for not including more proof and including more of my own opinion. I will definitely try to not make that mistake again. So my biggest challenge with this paper is keeping my opinion to myself in my writing. I keep reminding myself to include more proof and support, less opinions and personal feelings or experiences. I am hoping that I write it good enough and put in enough effort so that it will turn out at least average.
