My final topic for my argument paper is that welfare recipients should be drug tested before receiving benefits. This is something that I would think would really help the economy and the people in general. The main points that support my argument is that drugs lead to neglected children, more money spent, and less people having the opportunity to find a job and become self-sufficient. Drug using welfare recipients are less likely to find a job and become self-sufficient than non-drug using welfare recipients. Welfare recipients sometimes use the money they are given for drugs instead of its intended use. This means that taxpayers are basically paying for them to buy drugs. This results in higher taxes. I don’t agree with this and it would save taxpayers a lot of money if welfare recipients had to be drug tested before getting benefits because a high percentage of them wouldn’t pass the drug test, or just wouldn’t even take it in the first place and opt out, and therefore they wouldn’t receive benefits. Also living in a home with a drug addicted parent causes a lot of problems for a child and puts the child in a lot of danger and possibly abuse. Children with a substance abusing parent is almost guaranteed to be neglected. If welfare recipients would have to be drug tested before receiving benefits, it would motivate some people to stop their drug use because they know that they won’t receive welfare if they’ve been using. This would result in less abused and neglected children as well. If more welfare recipients were off drugs they would have a higher chance of finding a job and becoming self-sufficient again. I plan on using statistics showing about how much money taxpayers would save and facts on the amount of children that have been neglected due to drug addicted parents. I also plan on using statistics to show how many welfare recipients really do use drugs. I think that the greatest challenge for me when writing this paper is going to be finding accurate information. A lot of the information regarding drug use among welfare recipients is self-reported and therefore not that accurate.
