In my previous English classes, the instructors assigned short stories that had to be read often followed by reading comprehension. Previous class readings also required me to use rhetorical analysis to break down the texts to understand what the author was trying to achieve through his/her writing strategies used. I also had to compare novels to evaluate their similar themes and morals. In addition, there were other assignments that required me to write essay responses to given prompts that was turned in for points added onto my test grades. The instructors would also offer opportunities in the classroom for peer discussions and oral presentations could be presented to receive extra credit points. Recently, I have taken the English 2400 WI course that involved more critical reading and complex writing skills. I spent a lot of time in this course reading poems and writing multiple essays for each poem read such as a rough draft, final draft, and a revision paper to keep inside my English Portfolio. Things that I find beneficial from previous courses include: opportunities for me to gain and receive extra credit through participation, peer group discussions, and oral presentations. I feel that if instructors offered extra credit for students it could help them maintain a good grade in the course. Group discussions and oral presentations are also helpful because it provides more understanding of the class readings and often time includes a brief background about the author, which provides more detail on what influenced the authors to write such stories. Also, previous classroom discussions helped with understanding the plot of the stories. One main thing that I found to be the least beneficial from other courses was that I felt like I spent the entire course trying to figure out how the instructors wanted their papers written. It seems as though the instructors waited until the middle of the semester to come up with a general format of what they would accept as an effective paper. This was not beneficial to me also because I struggled with organization within my papers and didn't understand how to fix my papers according to the commentary the instructors would leave. The fact that I didn't fully understand how to write an effective paper at the time, affected my writing assignments. The majority of my previous English assignments were essays that I had to write. I also had to write a few journal responses reflecting a one-sided perspective of my opinions. This semester may offer a bit more of a challenge. I understand that this is also another Writing Intensive course that will involve more writing. This course requires me to write four main papers that is worth a good percent of my grade so I have to make sure I know what an effective paper looks like and apply more critical reading and writing skills. In contrast, to previous English courses, I really feel that I will be able to compose better essays after this semester. I have been given a general outline of what papers for this course should look like and that will make a difference now when I have to turn in all my writing assignments. (529)
