In my previous years of English classes I have done little to no writing, and what was assigned to me in my high school years was all just in preparation for future college essays and SAT writing sections for which I felt I was not completely prepared for. From the beginning to the end of high school I can say pretty confidently that the amount of important writing I have been assigned can be counted on two hands, most of which in my last semester as a high school student. All the other essays I had to complete were not beneficial for me. Some teachers did not give me any feedback and my papers rarely affected my grade. I work most effectively when I am aware of the mistakes I have previously made so I can know to look at them with a keener eye the next time I am working on a writing assignment.
What was beneficial to me was when we were assigned a book to read for class, or when we had to read a section of a book and answer questions on the passage. Usually these lessons were graded and I was always very open to the criticism and feedback my teacher left on them. After reading many short stories and novels I have noticed the improvement it has on my comprehension. Most of my teachers were open to questions and encouraged me to ask for help whenever I needed it. This made me feel very comfortable in the classroom and helped me realize that they cared about me gaining knowledge.
This semester what will help me most is that my professor is open to help me whenever I need it. I need to stay on top of my work and do my best on all assignments with the mindset knowing that I will get feedback on all of it. Whenever I am given a chapter or short story to read I have to finish it before the deadline and be prepared to do follow up questions and writing. Lastly, I need to be confident in the skills I have in English and writing and use them as much as possible, therefore when I receive comments on it I will gain knowledge and ability.
