“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” –Friedrich Nietzsche
If you face something tough in life, a hurdle or struggle of some sort, and you live through it, then you will be tougher and wiser from that experience. For instance, when my godmother died, I lost a person that I looked up to. Because of her passing, I learned to become a stronger person when it comes to dealing with the loss of loved ones. She meant the world to me and it was very hard on me and my mom. Getting over her death took a lot of time and has made me realize how precious life can be. This directly relates to the quotation because it involves a painful experience (one that, at the time, I felt could kill me) that in the end has made me stronger. Indeed, this applies to nearly all experiences in life. One can hardly imagine an experience in his or her life that did not teach something, no matter how big or small. This learning and strengthening is happening with every experience at every moment. Whether we choose to or not, our minds are constantly making new connections based on every new stimuli and are constantly changing the way they adapt to struggles. The interesting thing about the language in this quote is that it specifically says “that which does not kill us.” By definition, our entire life is nothing but the sum of the experiences that do not kill us. The quote also means that you will learn from your mistakes and be able to better cope with that situation should it ever occur again. You will also be able to use your new perspective to apply your knowledge to other areas in your life. It's something along the lines of “the first cut is always the deepest.” People are better able to handle the familiar than the unfamiliar. Once you've been hurt, you try to protect yourself and prepare for any future difficulty that may come your way, and never again will you let yourself be left so vulnerable.
