I choose the quote "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and I, I took the road less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." -Robert Frost, because I think these words resonate with my life the most. I think I march to my own drumbeat in a way. I usually diverge from the norm and follow my own path. Walking down these paths I know there are treacherous challenges ahead of me, and yet I face them head on.
My family labels me as the “Black sheep” or “The rebel” of the family. I have never agreed with their way of thinking and never feared the thought of standing up for what I think. While all three of my sisters stayed in the Middle East because of my Father’s authority, I worked hard to get a scholarship and applied to the U.S. and hauled my ass out of there dragging my sister Danah with me.
I was raised in a conservative Muslim family of six, so when I turned fourteen and applied myself into a mixed-gender school and changed my religion after I started dating, this did not settle well with my Mother whom I confided in. After wearing my hijab (head scarf) for almost two years, at fifteen I took it off, revealing to everyone that I am no longer a Muslim. So, yes, people judged me but I no longer felt like a hypocrite and I was able to be my liberal, open-minded self.
My parents never held me back from doing these things because they are always scared of losing me, since I have been in two comas, many ketoacidosis and seizures incidents and my most recent hit and run accident, basically I have almost died a couple times here and there but it’s never left a scar, emotionally. I have always told them to never pity me because I just do not have that word in my vocabulary. I guess this side of me resonates with the quote “The which does not kill us makes us stronger." -Friedrich Nietszche, but I feel like that’s a bit clique for my taste.
Another thing that made me a bit divergent than the other kids I grew up around, was that when I was sixteen I almost died during summer vacation, but I guess I was too stubborn to kick the damn bucket, a month after that happened I was sexually abused by someone close to me and two days later my Grandfather, the closest person to me, passed away. These series of events all happened within a short amount of time, none of them causing me to turn to some kind of harmful way of “helping” myself, but instead, I got two tattoos to remind me of the strength and willpower I had at the time. Tattoos in Islam are considered to be sinful so that made my religion situation a bit more obvious.
I took all the pain out onto canvas in my art class and the final pieces shocked or disturbed everyone at the art auction, I had become skillful at painting nudes. It was my only outlet and what made me come to peace with all that has happened. In summary, I almost got expelled, if it were not for my teachers backing me up and the students loving the fact that I was different and not afraid of showing such a blunt and liberal selection of art, it was not their usual vase of flowers or ballerina painting.
I have taken many more different roads in my life and I am proud of who I have become and what I have done whether or not others accept my path, good or bad, because it has made me the hero in my stories and I don’t need to be saved by anyone but myself.
