“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood and I, I took the road less traveled by, and that has made the most difference.” –Robert Frost
I feel that this quote strongly pertains to the way that I live my life day by day. Ever since I can remember my father has always told me “Be a leader, not a follower.” This saying used to get on my nerves, but lately I have realized that it has influenced me to make my own decisions in life, most of which have been for the better. In middle school particularly I was very close to falling into the wrong crowd, being the type of people who use drugs and get in trouble for theft. It actually scared me and continues to bother me how close I was to leading myself onto that path of life. This is similar to the quote in that I nearly took the road someone else was on just because I just wanted to stick with the crowd. The moment I decided to switch up who my friends were was a big turning point in my life. I went from the “bad group” to the “popular group” in what seemed like overnight. Without the guidance of my parents I might not have ever made this decision and by the time they would’ve known it possibly could have been too late. Most of the kids I associated in 7th grade are now either in jail, or they dropped out of high school and got a minimum wage job. When I think about them and compare it to my life I feel so fortunate for being taught to make my own decisions even if I am the only one in the group to be different.
Another way that my own decisions have affected my life is how I started playing hockey. I had never heard about hockey until I went on a family vacation to Toronto, Canada. While my family and I were up there my mother decided that we should make a trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame. It was almost as if right when I walked through the doors I fell in love with the sport I had just been introduced to. I will never forget the look on my father’s face while he was looking at some of the displays. I could tell that he had a serious passion for hockey when he was telling me about all the jerseys on the walls and all the players in the pictures. We went around another corner and they had two different simulators, one for playing goalie, and one for shooting the hockey puck. I think it was here that I decided that I wanted to give hockey a try. When I got home from our vacation my parents looked into it and luckily for me they had just started a recreational hockey league in my town. We got all of the necessary equipment and from the first time I stepped foot on the hockey rink, I have never had a moment where I thought I didn’t want to play hockey any longer. Most of my peers told me that hockey was stupid and football was better, but again because I was taught to make my own decisions, I decided that hockey would be the sport I would play from then on. A lot of the kids that were talking shit about hockey when I first told them about it ended up starting one or two years later. I was the leader, and they were the followers.
