The event that I have chosen to discuss in my personal narrative paper revolves around someone very important to me. My Aunt Debbie, who is my motherís sister, was born with Down syndrome. All of my life I have never found her to be different and we would enjoy family gatherings and vacations just as normal families would. Though once I grew to an age where I was more aware of my surroundings I started to notice things that may have slipped my eye when I was younger. The specific event that I have chosen to revolve my paper around is an event I still try not to remember.
I was in the sixth grade and I had just arrived in Florida to see my Grandma Grandpa, and Aunt Debbie. During day two of our vacation we visited Busch Gardens, which was our favorite amusement park. We were walking as a family to go to the river rapids ride when a voice emerged from behind us. A younger couple probably in their 20ís walked by with a stare as the man pointed and said, ďLook at that retard.Ē For the first time in my life I felt real anger and wanted to say something but did not know how. My grandmother clenched her teeth as did my mom and later explained that some people in life just arenít worth a second of your time.
This event outweighed all others to me because it is something that has popped up time and time again and helped me understand the world better. We as humans must adapt and understand things that only some have the gift to really know. I have the great pleasure of having a disabled aunt because regardless of the struggles she faces I have never seen her face without a large smile planted on it. I am appreciative for that moment and for her existence because it has helped me grow as a human, and be far more understanding and accepting. I feel passionate about this topic and feel that I can write a paper that has meaning to me. She has taught me that if I can do one thing right in life, it is to love just half as much as she does.
