I am choosing to write about March 28, 2014, the day my dad was diagnosed with leukemia. I remember everything about that day, from when I woke up to when I went to bed. I watched my dad go from someone who was always healthy and happy to someone who could barely get out of bed in the morning. Watching the cancer take over my dadís health and happiness was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. This event shaped who I am today and that is why I am writing about it. My dad had always been the strong one in the family and the cancer took this away from him. He was in the hospital for 6 weeks fighting with everything he had to beat it. Watching my dad fight through this made me realize that I could overcome anything. Within 2 months he made it into remission and officially beat leukemia. I have never been so proud of anyone in my life.
Living in a small town in New Hampshire, nothing ever happened. Sure I had my drama and heartbreaks, but nothing significant ever happened. When my dad got sick, my whole world flipped around. This is one of the most life changing things that has ever happened to me and my family. It wasnít just me that was affected, it was my whole family. My mom was exhausted from running to and from the hospital and work. Since I lived in such a small town everyone found out about what had happened and an outpouring of sympathy and condolences came from my friends, family, and people I barely knew.
My dad was living in the hospital, it got very lonely in my house. He wasnít around at dinner time and he wasnít there to kiss me goodbye before I went to school. My mom would sometimes take trips to the hospital which was an hour and a half away and spend a few nights with him. I would be alone while she was gone and it was really hard for me and it really made me mature and grow up. This event made me manage and prioritize my time because I had to balance school, softball, work and going to see my dad. Seeing my dad was my top priority but I had to think about school as well. A lot of the time I brought my school work with me to see my dad so that when he was sleeping I could do my homework or study.
