In my previous English classes I had good and bad experiences. My teachers throughout my high school career all had different teaching and writing styles. My senior English teacher made English class fun but he also challenged us. In this class there was a balance between learning and applying what we had learned. He would teach us ways to make our writing better and he would have us use our new techniques and writing styles immediately after. He also challenged us when we wrote our essays. He wouldnít assign us a thesis or topic to write about, he would make it open ended and left it up to us to plan, construct, and come up with a paper that fit his criteria. He didnít just give out Aís, he made you work for them. On my first essay, I got a C and was very disappointed. With his help and his comments on my papers I was able to continually bring my grade up with each paper that I would pass in. He would take his time when grading our papers so that he could give us criticism and ways to improve our writing. I think that this was the most beneficial in improving my writing because I got to see the mistakes that I was making and I was given tools to help my writing specifically. He read through our papers like a college professor would. He expected us to have the skills required to write a college level paper and he really prepared us for what college would be like. My junior English teacher was a very easy grader and rarely criticized our writing. She focused mainly on grammar and spelling rather than techniques and writing styles. She would talk about writing techniques and then give us examples of the them rather than having us try them and apply them to our writing. We learned from watching rather than doing, and I am a very hands on person, so this teaching style did not work well for me. I think being able to use the techniques right after I learn them helped me strengthen that skill and allowed me to use it in my writing to make it stronger.
