In the past I have been assigned many different types of papers. In previous years I have had personal narratives, argument papers, and persuasive essays. Like I wrote in the previous online discussion, I havenít really gotten much advice and feedback on previous papers, which has not helped me progress to become a successful writer. I also have written papers on books that we have read as a class, such as MacBeth and Grendel. They have been almost similar to the T.C. Boyle paper you have assigned, but instead of short stories, we had to write about the entire book and itís meaning. Though we have talked about poems in previous English classes and the meaning behind them, I have never written a paper that analyzes a poem. Poems have always been a difficult concept for me to grasp. I have a hard time trying to understand the hidden meaning behind the beautifully written words. I have found it easier to figure it out when we work in groups so that we come together to figure out the meaning as a team. Iím actually really excited to write the T.C. Boyle paper because the short stories are so interesting to me. All the stories that we have read so far have grabbed my attention, making me want to read the entire book. That brings me to my first question about the upcoming paper. Will we be reading the whole book, or just the stories up until the paper is due? Since there are two prompts, I have decided to do the compare and contrast two stories prompt. When the prompt says to state similarities and differences between the two stories, is it okay to summarize those parts of the stories? Or do you not want me to go too much into detail? Do we have to cite the book or any other sources? I also have a question regarding my personal narrative. The letter grade that we received in todayís class, is that the final grade of the paper, or just temporary until we fix what was wrong? I am just worried that my grade on the paper is going to bring my grade down by a lot.

What kinds of papers have you written before in terms of literature? Have you ever done a literary analysis? Poem analysis? What questions do you have going into this TC Boyle paper?
