I have written many papers throughout my career as a student. By many papers I mean anything ranging from research papers, short story and poem analysis to personal experiences. In terms of literature my papers were just about the short stories my class has read or a character analysis. We would discuss the motives of the characters’ actions, and what the author’s message was to the audience.
The only times I have done a literary analysis was junior and senior year of high school when I took AP Language and Composition and AP Literature. In literature my teacher had us look and analyze poems as well, unfortunately. I only did one poem analysis paper and I somehow got an “A” on it but I would really like to never do that again. She would teach us what the poem meant or what the poet was trying to say and then assign us a paper on it. For the literary analysis we would just read and annotate the story, analyze the characters and the author and then write a paper on the theme and other meanings in the story. I enjoy writing literary analyses because I am good at picking themes out of a story and I already analyze the characters while reading the story. That’s what I did for a literary analysis for “The Scarlet Letter” in my AP Language and Composition class. We had to annotate and analyze the characters as well as pick specific moments where the author used imagery or irony.
I personally love reading and writing papers on short stories because I like researching the meaning, theme and what the author is trying to convey in the story. The reason I like reading short stories so much is because it gives you an intriguing plot and an entertaining story without the commitment of a novel. My only question that I have about the TC Boyle paper is how the hell do I compare and contrast? I am so bad at comparing and contrasting things because I never know what to write so the result is always vague. Bless you for giving us a second option.
