Throughout my high school career, I didnít have to write very many papers. We would only write a couple papers a year, but when we did have a paper assigned they were usually a literary analysis paper. We would read poems, stories, and plays aloud in class and our teacher would have 3 or 4 prompts to choose from for us to write on. This limitation on the paper made it especially difficult for me to write. Not helping this difficult situation of trying to write a decent paper about a book I didnít enjoy whatsoever, my English teacher missed a few days of class about every week. We were allowed to do whatever we wanted when we had a substitute who usually just showed a movie to pass the time. Even on a lucky day when my teacher showed up and gave us time to work on our paper in class, I would go up to her desk and she would basically write whatever part of my paper I needed help with. So I was never really taught how to write a well organized paper besides what I learned on my own. I would find myself bullshitting my papers and just writing what I thought my teacher wanted to see and not what I actually took from the story. I donít know if my past teachers were more lenient or just gave me a decent grade because they liked me. I have a few questions going into the TC Boyle paper. One being do you think there is an easier topic between choosing two stories and writing a compare and contrast paper, or choosing to write about the recurring theme? I have always struggled with writing in general especially getting passed the minimum length requirement. I am glad about the in class discussion and explanations of the stories we read in class, this helps me because my reading comprehension is not the best and I can glance back at the notes I take in class. Another question going into this next paper is what can I do to improve my writing from my personal narrative? I was really confident in the work I put into that paper and found my grade surprising.
