For the Boyle paper I have chosen a compare and contrast style paper. For the compare and contrast paper, the two stories I am thinking about using are “On for the Long Haul” and “Big Game.” The reason that I have chosen these two to write about is because the main characters have many of the same flaws. I know that the stories are completely different, I have wanted to use these two from the moment that you told us when the paper was due. “On for the Long Haul” is my favorite story that we have read so far and I knew I wanted to use that for one of the stories. The main characters are both obsessive, greedy, and both receive the same faith due to unlikely circumstances. Whemp was obsessed with being safe from the apocalypse. Bender was obsessed with getting a big kill (lion and elephant). Whemp was greedy because he wanted to make this ridiculous move and did whatever he could to make his family make the move as well, even if they did not want to. Bender was greedy because he wanted to kill innocent animals for decoration for his homes and office. Lastly, both of these stories has Ironic endings. In Whemps, he went through so much trouble to move his family away from the modern world and to become safe. However, in the end his whole family and him are killed by another person who wanted the same safety. In Benders case his wife and him were killed by the very animal that they were trying to kill. The predator turned into the prey. In both of these ironic deaths, we are made to feel okay about it. I think this is because of the extremes at which both of these stories happen. They are also family men, even though Bender is questionable. I think I have enough analysis for these two short stories to work for this type of paper. As for their differences, so far I only have one. The only difference I can think of at the moment is that Whemp was greedy in oder to protect his family, according to his delusions. Whereas Bender was greedy for himself. word count 370.

Which option for the Boyle paper have you chosen (Theme or Compare/Contrast)? If theme, what theme have you chosen and why? What stories have you chosen for your paper and why?
