I have not decided what option for the Boyle paper I want to do. I am on the fence for each option and am not sure I know any stories well enough to make a themed or compare/contrast paper. For a themed paper, I could write about how Boyle always makes women come off extremely psychotic or seem like they have horrible personalities. I could use “Little Fur People”, “Modern Love”, or “Carnal Knowledge” because they display crazy women perfectly. Boyle seems almost sexist by how he makes the reader view women. I could also write about how Boyle views rich people. In all of Boyle’s stories, he also makes rich people seem really greedy and do not care about the other people or animals around them. I could use the stories “Human Fly” and “Big Game” Boyle makes the agent in “Human Fly” greedy and makes that character only care about money and publicity instead of the health of the person that is putting their health in danger. In “Big Game” Boyle makes the Benders greedy by the way they kill strictly for decoration and not because they need to eat and survive. A lot people that are not as well off typically have developed this stereotype so a reader can infer that Boyle might have had a tough upbringing or realized that some rich people he knew had tendencies to be snobby. I could also write a comparison and contrast essay with two stories that I have not read yet. Reading two other stories could be good for me because I can analyze and develop my own thoughts. It is a risky move because my ideas and thoughts could be totally wrong and the way I interpreted the stories could be totally different than what the author meant to be gained from reading it. I believe a well-developed comparison and contrast essay would be easier to write because I could write about the significance of events in the stories and how they were similar in the other story. A themed essay has a higher reward but is also harder to write because I would have to find evidence of how I think the author feels.
