I have not written my thesis yet but my topic will be about rich people and how Boyle always gives them the stereotype of being greedy. If I were to make up a thesis right now it would go, Boyles continued use of rich people displaying greed in his stories makes the readers think that he does not appreciate the moral standards of wealthy individuals. I can use “Big Game” and “The Human Fly” to support my thesis. In the “Big Game” the rich people are the Benders. They kill old circus animals to decorate their house. Mike Bender has to spoil his wife and she is extremely ungrateful. Boyle demonstrates that the stereotypical rich person is spoiled and does not need to work for their things. He thinks rich people do things for the wrong reasons too. The Benders killed animals for wants not basic needs of survival. In the end, Boyle displayed a form of justice when the elephant proceeded to stomp out the Bender family. In “The Human Fly”, Boyle portrays the rich people as the Sol the talent agent’s boss. He lets Zoltan do anything to get money from sponsors. If Zoltan were going to do something extremely dangerous, Sol would make sure that there was a sponsorship behind the event. Before Zoltan would do his stunts, Boyle would add one sentence about the logic of the event and how he should not do it because it would cause death. A reader can tell Boyle’s opinion by the way his sentence interjects with the story but the story continues without a second thought about it. Boyle also showed how greedy and shallow rich people are when Zoltan only had a handful of people show up to his funeral and only one person was showing only grief. Boyle is very judgmental when a reader looks at his stories in depth. He lets his readers know what he is thinking with subliminal messages. I can find more Boyle stories that follow the same theme because it is continuously on Boyle’s mind as he is writing because it reoccurs so often. Other Boyle stories will help me prove my point even more.
