My thesis for the Boyle paper is that Boyle believe that obsession is unhealthy and ultimately ends up making the situation worse, while greed causes people to take advantage of others and brings out their most selfish side. The two stories I think support my thesis the best are “On for the Long Haul” and “The Human Fly”. In “On for the Long Haul” Bayard Wemp has an extreme obsession with safety, we see this buy the half a million dollars he spends moving to the middle of nowhere in a small cabin. Wemp moves his family to Montana where the closest grocery store and hospital are two and a half hours away and the town only has a population of thirty seven. He buys guns and all sorts of things to protect himself with and flips his whole families world upside down just because of his obsession. In “The Human Fly” Zoltan is obsessed with becoming famous, he repeatedly performs dangerous stunts to try and get people’s attention and become famous. By the end of the story Zoltan is so unhealthy that he ends up dying trying to complete another stunt. He ended up killing himself trying to get famous and his obsession with fame is what made him do that. In both stories we see greed from the agents. In “On or the Long Haul” Arkson lets an extremely dangerous and short tempered man move in beside the Wemps just because he wants his money. He witnessed Cullum, the neighbor, threaten to kill Bayard and his family. Arkson was aware of how dangerous Cullum was and that he stuck to his word, but he was still willing to put Bayard and his whole families’ lives at risk just for more money. In “The Human Fly” the agent and Sol repeatedly let Zoltan perform stunts they know he is not healthy enough for just so they can get attention and money. They let Zoltan put his life on the line and ultimately end his own life just because of their greed. Even after Zoltan dies Sol and the agent do not feel guilty about his death which just shows how greedy they actually are.
