For the Boyle paper I have chosen to write about greed. Since my theme is greed I will focus on the stories “The Human Fly” and “The Big Game.” I am not too sure as to how I am going to start my thesis. I am along the lines of “Boyle believes that the greediness of the main characters in each story has led to their tragic death by which they desired the most.” I understand exactly how I’m going to write everything else, I just don’t know how to start my thesis statement that will soon help transition into my body paragraph one about the theme focus greed.

With greed being an obsession, both of these stories illustrate an obsession for a materialistic thing. In the “The Big Game”, the main characters were obsessed with the finest things in life. They had to have the best animal that was available, which in this case was an elephant. This longing to have the best thing regardless of what it cost to earn it resulted in them giving there life for this materialistic want. In “The Human Fly”, there were too separate desires. The main character, Zoltan, craved to be famous at all cost. The other main character, the narrator, desired to be rich. The narrators greediness for money involved him using Zoltan’s dreams for fame against him and cost Zoltan’s death. The disregard for his safety showed the character of the narrator who’s selflessness was what Boyle wanted us to be aware of.

Instead of including the outcome of both of those stories in each paragraph, I will format another paragraph to explain the outcome of greed. What is the result of greed thus being told in both stories? Besides death, what else was left? In “The Big Game”, at the end of the story they ended up leaving behind millions of riches to their twelve-year old daughter and she had no idea yet. In the end of “The Human Fly”, the life of one man left behind a new establishment for the narrator. The narrator ultimately is left with resentment that his brand name is built off the death of his first actual client. I will use these points to help relay this back to theme of greed in both characters.
