My thesis for the Boyle paper is: “In T.C. Boyle’s stories “On For The Long Haul”, “Little Fur People”, and “The Human Fly” he uses a cautionary attitude toward the theme of obsession by using his main characters in each of the story to demonstrate how harmful an obsession can be to one’s life. I felt like “On For The Long Haul” proved my thesis well because wemp’s obsession ultimately leads up to his death. His obsession controlled him and everything around him. He spent half of a million dollars and moved his family into the middle of nowhere for his need of safety. He got his appendix removed when there was nothing wrong with it, and he had a dream about the world and freaked and that is when he moved his family. Like he didn’t even know how to use a gun but he is so obsessed with safety that he buys it. Money can’t buy you everything, especially safety. “Little Fur People” supported my thesis well because homegirl (Grace) had like 32 squirrels and she is describes as if they are her pacemaker. She goes through ridiculous obstacles to make sure they don’t get taken away. Her obsession with squirrels has caused a distant relationship with her daughter and an unfriendly relationship with her neighbors due to the foul smell that comes from her house. She is pretty much a squirrel hoarder. She breaks laws and does ridiculous things for the squirrels. “The Human Fly” supports my thesis because zoltan is obsessed with fame and death (We assume death even though it isn’t word by word stated in the story). His obsession(s) effect his health as the agent describes him to look malnourished with torn clothes, and smelling bad. He is willing to die to become famous. But also he keeps on hurting himself which makes you come to the assumption that he is also obsessed with death. I feel like all three of these stories also support Boyle’s cautionary tone by showing this is what obsessions can do to you and the people around you, you can become so obsessed with something until it kills you (unless you are zoltan and obsessed with death).
