For the T.C Boyle paper, my thesis is that Boyle thinks that obsession is an evil thing and can break apart relationships and ultimately the human life. I chose “Little Fur People” to prove my thesis because Grace, the main character is obsessed with squirrels and had a total of thirty leaving in her house. She referred to them as her “babies” However, Grace had a daughter of her own and due to her fixation on her squirrels she has ruined the relationship between her and her daughter. In the end, her obsession basically drove her to a point of insanity and she had no one there to help her. I also chose “On For The Long Haul” because Boyle portrays a similar idea in the story that obsession is a horrible thing. Bayard, the main character is obsessed with keeping his family safe. To keep them safe, he decides to spend tons of money on weapons and a new house. The house is in the middle of nowhere and he ripped both his daughters away from their school and activities back at their home. Little did Bayard know that he was moving his family into direct danger. The family’s next-door neighbor Cullum was even more fixated on being safe and was willing to kill anyone and everyone The part in “Little Fur People” that best proves my thesis is the part in which Grace has a meltdown about her “babies” being taken away and her daughter just gets in the truck with her husband and leaves her. In “On For The Long Haul” the part that best supports my thesis is when Cullum and Bayard are having a standoff and Bayard is trapped. He realized that moving to get away from danger only put him and his family into more danger. It ultimately also costed him his relationships with his daughter as they were not happy having to leave and all they got in return was two bunnies that end up being killed. Boyle uses these two stories to show the he thinks obsession is a horrible thing and can ruin people.
